I could never give that up!

I have never heard a phrase more in my life then " I could never give that up", and I hear it the most when i tell people I'm vegan. As someone who spent most of there life eating the standard american diet I used to think the same way to. I loved going to Tim Horton's every morning and getting a  bacon, egg and cheese sandwich for breakfast. I put cheese on everything and never thought twice about my choices when it came to what I was eating. This isn't a story to turn you vegan though. Its about something completely different all together.

"I could never give that up!!"

I have been thinking about this phrase a lot lately and I think its something we should all stop saying. Once you say it you are completely closed off from having an open discussion with yourself about possibly something better for yourself. I could never give that up means you haven't weighed all your options. So what should you say instead?

"What am I gaining by changing my habits?"

This shift will help you to weight out the pros and cons of the choices you are making. Going back to the topic of being vegan, its not until I questioned my believes I grew up with that I really was able to open my eyes to what my values were.  This can also apply to all habits you have acquired in your life. One of my current worst habits I have been trying to work on has been sleeping in past my alarm and pressing the snooze button. I tell myself every night that in the morning I'm going to be a new person and change my ways. But once my alarm goes off my mind immediately goes back to thinking I cant give up this extra 30 mins of sleep for anything in the world and I hit the snooze button. This has gone on and progressively got worse for the last 5 years.

Make a List!!

To really get a clear picture you should make a list of all the things you'll gain from "giving that up". Once you see all the great things that you will gain from changing your ways it will out-way your past believes of lacking. It wont be easy at first to change things you have held on to for so long but it never hurts to at least try something new once.
